As advocates for community wellness, all of us at ProHealth Chiropractic always want to see our people be the healthiest they can be. In this post, we’ll take a very brief look at a simple yet critical step to good health—drinking enough water. Since 60% of the human body is made up of water, we’ll explain some of the benefits of staying properly hydrated.

Water can help you control your appetite

Water in and of itself doesn’t make you burn calories, but study after study has shown that drinking enough water can help control the appetite. People who drink enough water tend not to have the constant urge to snack between meals. This is because, in addition to being beneficial to overall health, water also helps keep you feeling full—or at least not feeling so hungry that you need to snack all the time.

Water prevents fatigue

Muscle cells rely on maintaining a balance of liquids and electrolytes, and without enough water, they shrivel up. These cells shriveling is what causes muscle fatigue. Keeping hydrated, therefore, prevents this from happening so easily. This is especially important when you are losing a lot of water through perspiration while you’re working out.

Water keeps skin from wrinkling easily

Water is a big part of what makes up skin tissue. People who are dehydrated tend to have skin that wrinkles and dries out easily. While it’s true that over-hydration will not remove wrinkles, staying properly hydrated will keep the skin from drying out and creating extra wrinkles that could be avoided.

Water flushes your system

Finally, water is essential to flushing toxins out of your body. The waste removal processes in the human body are extremely efficient, but they depend on a constant inflow and outflow of liquids to carry the toxins out. Drinking water is critical here, and a body that’s removing toxins properly is a healthy body.

These are only a very few of the many, many reasons to get enough water, but hopefully these fast facts serve as a reminder for you to pay attention to getting enough water. We want you to be your healthiest!

If you’re like most people who have never had chiropractic care, you may have a few questions and maybe even a few reservations. That’s ok and it’s perfectly normal! In fact, it’s good to ask questions and take precaution when it comes to your health. However, we hate seeing people miss out on being at 100% because of their reservations—we want you feel your best! Here are a few common misconceptions some people have about chiropractic care.

M: Chiropractic care will take a very long time, and I’ll have to invest a significant amount of money before I see any results.

A: Continuous ongoing chiropractic care does have many long-term benefits for most people, but depending on what specific problem you are experiencing, you may start to see results in a relatively short period of time. Oftentimes when patients come with specific and identifiable pain or other issues, we’re able to begin addressing it immediately. One of the benefits of working with highly-trained chiropractors like the doctors at ProHealth is that they have the experience to diagnose accurately and can often begin treating right away. This only comes with years of experience and training.

M: I’ll have to pay out of my pocket for chiropractic care.

A: Every insurance plan is different. While it’s certainly true that some insurance plans don’t cover chiropractic care, very many plans do. You can always check with your provider to find out, but don’t just assume it’s not included in your plan. Some plans even included a set amount of chiropractor visits with no out-of-pocket cost. It’s a “use it or lose it” feature of the plan for lack of a better term. Finally, even if your plan doesn’t cover chiropractic care, it can be surprisingly affordable—especially if you are able to prevent larger health issues from arising through your chiropractic care.

M: Chiropractic adjustments are painful

A: Understandably, people who have never been adjusted might feel nervous; however, chiropractic doctors are trained and skilled at making adjustments comfortable and effective. Many people report feeling a sense of calmness and relief after receiving an adjustment.

We hope the information above has been helpful to you as you make your decision about what works best for you. As always, the Mequon and Cedarburg chiropractors at ProHealth are always willing to answer any more questions you might have. Please give us a call today!

“Sit up straight and pay attention!” I bet you can hear your 5th grade teacher’s voice in your head right now. And while she might have insisted you sit up so you could pay attention better, she may have been onto something regarding your health, too.

Let’s face it. Many of us don’t practice good posture, and our modern lifestyle is not making things any easier. As computer usage becomes an integral part of many jobs, we find ourselves sitting in front of a screen for several hours a day. Or if you travel for work, you may be sitting on a plane or behind the wheel for hours and hours each week. With all that sitting, it can be easy to slouch or just kind of take a “relaxed” approach to your posture.

So what does it really matter? Why is good posture important? Are there actually any benefits to your health? In a word: yes.

First of all, good posture means your bones and muscles are aligned as nature intended. It also helps your joints and ligaments all work together. In addition, your digestion and even organ positioning may be negatively affected by poor posture. Even if you don’t feel the negative effects right away, they may show up later in your life if you consistently don’t pay attention to your posture.

And poor posture can just make you just plain feel bad. It can prevent you from getting good sleep, it can make your muscles tire more easily, and it can cause your neck and back to be sore or to ache.

So what can you do? First of all, you should consult the Mequon and Cedarburg chiropractors at ProHealth. Through a series of adjustments and ongoing chiropractic care, they can help you un-do the negative effects of poor posture. In additional, they’ll help you move forward doing the right things to keep you healthy and prevent problems from arising.

So make a decision to pay attention to your posture. The benefits you’ll get will surprise you!

It’s a brand new 2016, and for many people, this is the month of year they think about their health plan for the upcoming year. Perhaps your place of employment has gotten a new health insurance plan for you. Maybe you’re shopping for dental insurance or planning how much to save in a health savings account. And with the new Affordable Care Act laws finally going into full effect, you might have some information to navigate if you are taking that route.

But still, many people take a reactive approach to health, healthcare, and paying for healthcare. They figure they don’t know what the upcoming year will bring, and will just need to react to whatever happens. For example, some cold and flu seasons are worse than others. Will you go to the doctor 4 times this year for a cold? Not at all? Who knows, right?

With the start of a new year, it may be a good time to thinking about a proactive approach to health and overall wellness. To be sure, there will always be doctor’s visits and medical expenses that can’t be predicted, but there are some things you could be doing to try to stay on top of your health.

For example, getting into a good, healthy exercise routine is an excellent preventative health measure. Not only will your muscles be in better shape, exercise can help your immune system be its best as well. You have a much better chance of fighting off the common cold or flu the healthier you are.

And then there’s chiropractic care. Though many people don’t realize it, being in an ongoing chiropractic care routine has a whole host of preventative health benefits. First of all, being in a good routine simply makes your body feel better so you can stick to that workout routine and have fewer excuses for stopping it. Second, ongoing chiropractic care has actually been shown to help strengthen the immune system so you have a better chance of warding off those common colds and the flu.

While too many to post here, there are many more proactive health benefits of getting into an ongoing chiropractic care routine. If you’re looking for skilled and helpful Mequon or Cedarburg chiropractors, contact ProHealth Chiropratic today. We want 2016 to be your healthiest year yet!

From your Mequon chiropractors at ProHealth, we would like to say welcome to a brand new 2016! If you are like most people, you probably have some goals and ambitions for the New Year. Maybe your goals are modest—like just trying to get a bit more regular sleep. Or perhaps you have something ambitious planned, like trying to pay off all of your credit cards, making a large purchase, or getting into a rigorous exercise and fitness routine.

No matter what you resolutions are, it’s fair to say that, for many people, their resolutions revolve around their New Year’s health. For the most part, these resolutions are good things. It’s always a good idea to try to be the best you that you can be.

Unfortunately, for some people, they only focus on one aspect of their health. If their goal is to lose weight, they focus their efforts in that area only and can be tempted to ignore the other things they should be doing. For example, if they want to exercise better, they may only focus on their workout routine but not pay attention to nutrition.

As Mequon chiropractors at ProHealth, science and our training have taught us that health is a multi-faceted thing. While it’s great to try to lose weight, it would be foolish to ignore other aspects of health like proper nutrition, exercise, and good sleep. The same thing can be said for chiropractic care. If you are doing other things to become the healthiest you can be, that’s great! But keeping up with your ongoing chiropractic care is also very important. Without your body working with you to achieve your goals, you’ll find it harder to stick with that routine.

Here in Wisconsin, we’re not like other states with a year-round mild climate. We have to be creative during the winter if we want to stay active. In general, I’d say we’ve done a pretty good job of figuring out how we can still enjoy the outdoors even during the cold and snowy months of winter. For many of us, the alternative of being cooped up indoors for many months just isn’t acceptable. So we put on our boots, mittens, and hats and head outside anyway—despite the bitter weather.

During these winter months, what do you do outdoors for fun? Are you a skier or snowboarder? Do you enjoy more “casual” activities like sledding and building snowmen in the yard? Do you snowmobile or do you prefer ice skating? Whatever you do to stay active, staying safe and healthy is just as important during the winter as it is during the warmer months.

Though we don’t always think about our winter activities as “sports,” in most cases, they are every bit (or more) physically demanding than what we do during the summer. So it makes sense that we’d take care of our bodies in the same way during winter as well.

If you have a chiropractic care routine you follow during your active spring/summer/fall months, it’s just as important to keep up with it during the winter. Winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding can be especially hard on your body, and in order to keep in tip top shape, it’s a great idea to be faithful in your chiropractic care routine.

If you don’t have a chiropractor or a chiropractic care routine, contact us at ProHealth. We’re Mequon chiropractors who want to see you live your healthiest and fullest life—even during the winter months!

You’ve probably heard the advice a thousand times from your parents, gym teachers, doctors, personal trainers, and everyone else—lift with your legs, not your back. Though the advice seems to lose some of its impact the more times you hear it, it’s very important advice nonetheless, and there is a reason you’ve heard it so many times before.

At this time of year, it’s an especially good time to remind ourselves once again about how important proper lifting technique is. The snow will start falling before you know it, and we’ll all be pulling out our shovels to clear our walks and driveways.  Because of the repetitive nature of shoveling snow, it’s actually very easy to injure your back if you aren’t taking precaution to exercise proper technique. Especially troublesome can be the heavy, wet snow and slush. Instead of simply using the shovel to “push” the snow off your walk or driveway, heavy, wet snow requires scooping, carrying, and dumping the snow. If you’ve every had to shovel this kind of snow before, you know just how difficult it can be to lift! Be careful and make sure you lift with your knees and legs and spare your back!

Unfortunately, shoveling snow is just a fact of life when you live in Wisconsin–especially around Milwaukee with all the lake effect snow–or any of the other northern Midwestern states. But we can at least make the best of it and try to stay safe while clearing snow. Stay warm and stay safe out there this winter!

Vitamin D is very important to the human body. And the lack of vitamin D can cause or exacerbate a whole host of health problems. In fact, a quick bit of research will make it very apparent that the importance of vitamin D is a well-established medical fact. For example, did you know that vitamin D deficiencies have been linked to higher rates of certain types of cancers, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, autoimmune conditions, mood disorders, and skin diseases?

In humans, the most common way that our bodies produce Vitamin D is through exposure to sunlight. Studies have shown that, in northern states like Wisconsin, the shorter days of fall and winter make vitamin D production very difficult. By some estimates, we don’t even get direct enough midday sun to even cause your body to produce enough vitamin D even if you were to get outside in the sun. As a result, many of us living in the northern states are vitamin D deficient.
So what can you do? First of all, you can get your vitamin D levels tested. Routine bloodwork that often accompanies a yearly well visit at your doctor will test for vitamin D in many cases. If you find out your levels are low, your doctor may have advice for you on a supplement you can take. A supplement can do a pretty good job of making up for what your body cannot produce during  the lulls of winter.

So get your vitamin D levels tested today. If you are deficient, you may realize several health benefits by working to correct the deficiency.

At ProHealth Chiropractic Center, we’re always concerned about the overall wellness of our patients.  Chiropractic care plays a very important role in wellness, but there are other factors as well. Today, we will look briefly at the role sleep plays in wellness.

We’ve all heard the studies about how many American adults don’t get enough sleep. Different studies have different numbers, but their ultimate conclusion is the same every time: Americans are sleep deprived!

For most of us, we don’t make a purposeful decision to skip sleep—it just kind of happens. We are so busy with work, family life, recreation, and everything else that we skimp on sleep because there simply aren’t enough hours in the day.

When we skip sleep, we usually feel it the next day. Most people report feeling tired the next day when they get fewer than seven hours of sleep the night before. It takes longer to do work, it’s hard to concentrate, and overall, we are just not as productive as we can be. And usually we are willing to make that trade off in order to cram a few extra hours into our day.

As a Milwaukee chiropractic clinic, we mainly focus on the preventative benefits of chiropractic care.  Chiropractic care is very important, but there are other ways to stay healthy too. For example, new studies are showing, more and more, the preventative health benefits of getting enough sleep. Adults who get enough sleep are much less likely to get sick. Workplace and car accidents are also often caused by groggy people who aren’t paying attention to what they are doing. And one study has even shown the link between sleep deprivation and poor heart health!

If we change our mindset a bit, there becomes a bit more urgency to making sure we get enough sleep. Most people don’t think much of being tired the next day, but if someone told you that you could prevent that week-long nagging cold and cough by getting a little extra sleep, wouldn’t you do it? Or if you knew you could avoid an expensive and dangerous workplace accident by going to bed an hour earlier, wouldn’t that make sense?

So, in addition to taking other preventative health measures like receiving ongoing chiropractic care, get your sleep too! In addition to feeling much better and being more productive, you will be healthier and safer!

Many people only first seek chiropractic care in reaction to a specific injury or nagging ache or pain. Maybe it’s a minor car accident that causes neck pain, or maybe it’s a sports injury that prompts a visit to the chiropractor. And chiropractic care can often do wonders for those types of issues.

But many people don’t realize that, in some cases, they may get great benefits from chiropractic care even if they don’t know they need it.  Oftentimes, people do not have a full range of motion in their neck and upper cervical spine. There may only be very mild pain (or no pain at all) accompanying the lack of range of motion, and so, many don’t even realize that they are having a problem. For them, their lack of range of motion is just a normal part of their lives. They might not even know that they are supposed to have a better range of motion.

At ProHealth Chiropractic of Random Lake, WI and Thiensville, WI our expert doctors are trained to recognize problems with range of motion—whether the patient is aware of it or not. An ongoing chiropractic care routine can often solve these issues, and advice from our doctors about your daily habits and routines can even prevent problems from reoccurring.  You may be surprised at what you’ve been missing and after a problem is corrected, many patients can’t even imagine the life they used to live.

Schedule a consultation with one of our Milwaukee-area chiropractors today. We’ll identify your range-of-motion issues and come up with a plan to address them and prevent them in order to keep you as healthy as possible through a regular chiropractic care routine.
